The Kent State University Speech Pathology and Audiology Department is host to a four- year pilot project to determine the efficacy of using a telepractice service delivery model to provide speech and language therapy services to students in rural Ohio school districts. The project is funded by OMNIE (Ohio Master’s Network Initiatives in Education) through the Ohio Department of Education. Therapy sessions via telepractice are very similar to face-to-face therapy sessions with the exception that the student interacts with the therapist via video conferencing. Telepractice therapy services are not intended to replace traditional on-site therapy. Rather they are intended to provide Master's level speech language therapy services to rural schools that are undeserved or are unable to attract a speech language pathologist to their area. This project is just one of several Ohio initiatives to address the critical shortage of speech language pathologists throughout the state. |
